Since 2014, SoulFood Fellowship has been happening at The Park combining Bible Study, faith reflection, and fellowship, sharing a meal, and small group meetings in homes and at the church.

Over the years, under the leadership of Sydney Avent and Richard Sturm (and, in past years, also Peter Heltzel, Daisy Machado, and Ismael Sanchez), such topics as the following have been explored:

  • The Spiritual Disciplines—Prayer, Worship, Bible Study, Hospitality, Service, Giving, Faith seeking Understanding;
  • Social Concerns—Women in Scripture, Texts of Terror/Women and Violence in the Bible, and Danielle McGuire’s book, The Rape of Recy Taylor, and currently Elizabeth Kolbert’s book, The Sixth Extinction;
  • The Arts and Special Events—Reading short stories by Flannery O’Connor and James Baldwin; screening the documentary film on The Rape of Recy Taylor; attending the Off-Broadway play Little Rock, on the Little Rock Nine.
  • Special Projects—sponsoring the collection of Backpacks for NYC homeless children.

SoulFood Fellowship gatherings have served participants with deepening skills in biblical interpretation and insights into faith, sharpening critical thinking about faith and current events and concerns in society, politics, and economy, and taking personal and collective action on issues of social justice.  In so doing, community is strengthened, the Church is edified, and our actions in the world become more faithful and effective.
