“Sin is Death” by The Rev. Kaji Douša

In church today for this first Sunday of Lent, we read one of the creation stories – maybe you’ve heard it – where the first humans were so tempted by the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, that they ate of the fruit against God’s command. And God had said that if you eat of the fruit you shall die, and yet, the first humans did live, out of God’s mercy. What I’d like to say in this season of Lent, when we reflect on what we call “sin” in church, is that there is something about our sin when we do not follow through on what God wants us to do, where something in us dies. But the beauty of the story of creation is that God intends life for us, and that the first humans were able to live. So even when we sin against God, if we turn back, God gives us a new sense of life. Thanks be to God. Amen
