“Be Free From Your Thirst” by The Rev. Kaji Douša

So, in our culture today, we talk a lot about folks who are thirsty. And we know the thirsty as people who have a tendency to do way more and go far beyond what’s appropriate in pursuit of a poor goal. And I wonder, if that isn’t also a spiritual orientation? Are you behaving in a thirsty manner in any particular way? Are there things that you are reaching for that are inappropriate in your life and leading you to behaviors that you know are not your best self? If that’s so, I think of the words that come out of Isaiah, where God, or Isaiah, is sharing with us, something that God wants everyone to know. “Come to me, all you who are thirsty, and I will give you water to drink.” What a beautiful message! Because when we have these inappropriate things, or behaviors, or desires, that do not serve us well, we have an opportunity to turn to God, who will give us the drink that we need – not the drink that we don’t need. And as I borrow from the recovery community, I encourage us all to think about never letting an idea or a person live in our heads rent free. Be free from your thirst and come to God with the living water. Amen.
