Sunday Preview for June 25 from The Rev. Kaji Douša
Dear Church,
This Sunday we have the great privilege of blessing our next slate of congregational leaders. Please plan to come to worship at 10:40 to vote on the slate of people nominated to lead for our elected positions. We will offer a blessing for them during the 11 am service.
As an intellectually “evolved” person, I tend to try to avoid binaries. But, for the sake of preaching, sometimes they are helpful.
Other times, especially in New York City in a week like this one, it is helpful to explore the differences between Pride and shame.
Who has the right to speak on Pride? Whose voice is it most important to hear? Whose stories need to be acknowledged? Any church that wants to approach what they call wokeness, a sense of being awakened to the deep needs of others, needs to consider these questions. Meanwhile, it is important to me, as the cisgender, straight, she-pronouned woman of color that I am to show up for Pride with the Gospel that leads me. For this reason, I realized that this Sunday’s sermon needed to be offered in conversation.
For this reason, I have invited Klay Silas Williams, our convener of The Gathering, a millennial-focused worship and storytelling exploration experience that seeks God in the midst of so much else, to share his own story of Pride and shame in his complicated relationship with church in the midst of his uncomplicated relationship with God. At this week’s inaugural Speak experience, Klay shared this story in a way that I knew the rest of the congregation needed to hear.
Sunday will explore concepts of Pride and shame. What is God calling you to wonder related to these important concepts? What does your soul need to hear?
Come to worship on Sunday to learn and grow in the Holy One. And bring a friend who needs this Word.
Here is our text from Psalm 31
In you, O Lord, I seek refuge;
do not let me ever be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me.
Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me.
You are indeed my rock and my fortress;
for your name’s sake lead me and guide me,
take me out of the net that is hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
O how abundant is your goodness
that you have laid up for those who fear you,
and accomplished for those who take refuge in you,
in the sight of everyone!
In the shelter of your presence you hide them
from human plots;
you hold them safe under your shelter
from contentious tongues.
Blessed be the Lord,
for the Lord has wondrously shown steadfast love to me
when I was beset as a city under siege.
I had said in my alarm,
‘I am driven far from your sight.’
But you heard my supplications
when I cried out to you for help.
Love the Lord, all you saints.
The Lord preserves the faithful,
but abundantly repays the one who acts haughtily.
Be strong, and let your heart take courage,
all you who wait for the Lord.
In the incredibly diverse LGBTQIAA communities there are many emblems of Pride. The church need not share them all, but it does need to make room for them all. We invite you to bring a marker of yours.
Finally, please join me in congratulating The Rev. Dr. Daisy Machado for receiving the University of Chicago’s Distinguished Alumna Award. We are so proud to be part of Dr. Machado’s important, lifelong ministry.

A pesar de ser una persona sofisticada, trato de evitar los conceptos binarios. No obstante, en el contexto de la predicación suelen ser útiles.

Por esta razón, invité a Klay Silas Williams, nuestro facilitador de “El Encuentro”, una experiencia de adoración y de narraciones personales para personas en sus 30’ quienes buscan a Dios en el medio de tantas otras cosas, para que él comparta su experiencia de Pride (Orgullo gay) y vergüenza dentro de su relación complicada con la iglesia, y en el medio de su directa relación con Dios. La semana pasada, Klay compartió esta historia en una manera que creo que el resto de la congregación necesita escuchar.
Este domingo exploraremos los conceptos de Pride (Orgullo gay) y la vergüenza. ¿Cuál es el llamado de Dios a ti en relación a estos conceptos importantes? ¿Qué necesita escuchar tu alma?
Ven a alabar con nosotras y nosotros el domingo para aprender y crecer dentro de lo Sagrado. ¡Invita a una amiga o amigo que necesita escuchar esta palabra de esperanza!
Son muchos los emblemas de las comunidades LGBTQIAA. La iglesia no necesita compartirlos todos, pero necesita hacer espacio para todos estos. Te invitamos a que traigas el emblema que te representa.
Finalmente, únanse a mí en felicitar a La Rev. Dr. Daisy Machado por premio recibido, el galardón de la ex alumna más distinguida de la Universidad de Chicago. Nos sentimos orgullosos de ser parte de la trayectoria de su ministerio.
