Question: “What are you looking for?” (John 1:38)
What are you really searching for?
That’s the very first thing Jesus asks. “What are you looking for?”
Desire is holy ground. This Sunday, we start our new series Answer Me This: Jesus’ Questions Still Matter with the question that starts everything.
Let’s get honest about what we’re chasing…and what’s chasing us.
This Week’s Study Guide
Scripture: John 1:35-39 (NSRV)
(Read slowly. Let it unfold like a scene you’re stepping into.)
35 The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and as he watched Jesus walk by he exclaimed, “Look, here is the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. 38 When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which translated means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon.
Questions for Reflection or Small Group:
- What are you looking for in: your faith, your relationships, your life?
- Where have you been searching? Has it brought you closer to God?
- What does it feel like to imagine Jesus asking you this question directly?
Spiritual Practice for the Weekend:
Take 10 minutes this weekend to write a prayer, a letter, or a journal entry that begins with:
“What I’m really looking for is…”
Let it be honest. God can handle it.
