Question: “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29)

Jesus made it personal: “Who do you say that I am?”

Not what they say. Not your parents. You.

This Week’s Study Guide

Scripture: Mark 8:27-30 (Year B, p. 437)

(Sit with the progression from “they say” to “you say.”)

27 Now Jesus went with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 And they answered, saying, “John the Baptizer and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” 29 He asked them, “But who do you all say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” 30 And he warned them so they would tell no one about him.

Reflection:

Peter doesn’t hesitate. “You are the Messiah.”

But moments later, he’ll misunderstand what that means.

Our words might come easily. Living them takes a lifetime.

Questions for Reflection or Small Group:

  1.   Who have you said Jesus is in your life so far?
  2.   What has shaped your image of Jesus most? Scripture, culture, family?
  3.   What does it look like to live like Jesus really is your Savior?

Spiritual Practice for the Weekend:

Say Jesus’ name in prayer this weekend as a way of anchoring yourself in love.

Try: “Jesus, you are…” and finish the sentence as honestly as you can.
