“Blessed are…” – Sunday Preview for November 5
This week we welcome to the pulpit, Rev. Jeanette Zaragoza-De León who has been a wonderful leader in our church as we open our hearts, minds, and voices to God’s call of justice through intersectional and bilingual worship. It is also All Saints Day and Dia de los Muertos a time to remember those we have loved and lost. With the events of Tuesday evening, in the city of NYC, freshly on our hearts and minds this day of remembrance seems especially meaningful. I am thankful each Sunday that you chose to make The Park your faith home. Sometimes it is easy to forget the being present with the people you love is a precious gift, therefore, I hope to see you all this Sunday either in person or online for what I know it will be an inspiring hour of worship.
This week as we remember our loved ones we are invited to reflect on the many different things that made them special to us, the strength and guidance they brought to our lives. The love we feel when we remember their warm embrace. The deep gratitude for the spaces of vulnerability they shared with us. Vulnerability, like any other part of us, is intersectional and complex which is perfectly highlighted in this week’s scripture, “The Beatitudes” of the book of Matthew. I was so moved by them that my message this week is simple: The Beatitudes are both timeless and current. Which is why I present them to you from both the NRSV, and then I have also written my own.
“When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
“Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
“Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely[b] on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” Matthew 5:1-12 NRSV
“Blessed are the shamed bodies, for they reflect the image of God.
Blessed are those who struggle against the stigma of mental health, for they shall know peace.
Blessed are those who resist systems of oppression, for they are manifesting the kin-dom of God.
Blessed are those who build bridges not walls, for theirs is the future of creation.
Blessed are the victims of sexual assault, for God hears their cries and demands a better future.
Blessed are those who speak truth, for theirs is the breath of God made sacred and firm
Blessed are the victims of human violence, hate, and terror, for God weeps with them and dreams of their better future.
Blessed are those that do not find themselves in the images of the scripters as translated by the patriarchy and empire, for they will hear God in many places.
Blessed are those who can’t breathe, who walk with skittles, and who drive without headlights, for their safety is God’s concern and God’s promise.
Blessed are those incarcerated, for they are bound in the eternal forgiveness of God’s love.
Blessed are the immigrants and refugees, for they belong to the nation of God.
Blessed are those who create, inspire, and dream new visions of tomorrow, for theirs is the future of the church.
Blessed are those who are told they are not welcome in their military, their family, or their bathroom, for they embody God’s love.
Blessed are those without water in Puerto Rico and Flint, for their thirst for justice will be quenched.
Blessed are those who are not named in their struggle and whose voices are not heard or valued in their fights, for they shall have God at work in their mind.”

Friends, I hope this week finds you loved, comforted, and inspired by those who have influenced your life. I hope that inspiration offers both deep reflection and unbridled hope for our world to come. Writing these beatitudes has helped me remember all the ways God is calling me to be present to both my past and my future. Who are “the blessed” in the world and in your life that are calling you to do the same?

Esta semana le damos la bienvenida a la Revda. Jeanette Zaragoza-De León quien ha sido una líder maravillosa en nuestra iglesia para abrir nuestros corazones, pensamientos y voces al llamado de Dios a la justicia a través de nuestra liturgia bilingüe e inter seccional. También celebramos el Día de los Muertos y El día de todos los Santos. Será un momento para recordar aquellos que hemos amado y perdido. Con los sucesos del martes en la noche, en la ciudad de NY, que están frescos en nuestra memoria, esta celebración parece ser bastante significativa. Sigo agradecida que cada domingo personas como tú escogen hacer de The Park su hogar de fe. A veces es fácil olvidarnos que estar con las personas que amamos es una bendición, por eso, espero verles a todxs este domingo, ya sea en persona o en línea para un culto que sé será inspirador.
Esta semana, mientras recordamos a quienes amamos, se nos invita a reflexionar en las muchas maneras en que son especiales para nosotrxs, la fortaleza y la sabiduría que han ofrecido en nuestras vidas. El amor que sentimos cuando nos acordamos de su caluroso abrazo. El profundo agradecimiento por los espacios de vulnerabilidad que han compartido con nosotros. La vulnerabilidad, como otros aspectos de nosotrxs, es compleja e interseccional lo que se manifiesta en la Escritura de esta semana, “Las beatitudes” del libro de Mateo. Estas me ministraron tanto que mi mensaje esta semana es sencillo: Las beatitudes son atemporales y aplican al presente. Por eso es que les presento la versión tomada del NIV, al igual que mi versión.
“Cuando vio a las multitudes, subió a la ladera de una montaña y se sentó. Sus discípulos se le acercaron, y tomando él la palabra, comenzó a enseñarles diciendo:
«Dichosos los pobres en espíritu,
porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.
Dichosos los que lloran,
porque serán consolados.
Dichosos los humildes,
porque recibirán la tierra como herencia.
Dichosos los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia,
porque serán saciados.
Dichosos los compasivos,
porque serán tratados con compasión.
Dichosos los de corazón limpio,
porque ellos verán a Dios.
Dichosos los que trabajan por la paz,
porque serán llamados hijos de Dios.
Dichosos los perseguidos por causa de la justicia,
porque el reino de los cielos les pertenece.
Dichosos serán ustedes cuando por mi causa la gente los insulte, los persiga y levante contra ustedes toda clase de calumnias. Alégrense y llénense de júbilo, porque les espera una gran recompensa en el cielo. Así también persiguieron a los profetas que los precedieron a ustedes”. (Mateo 5:1-12 NIV)
Dichosxs son los cuerpos humillados, pues ellos reflejan la imagen de Dios.
Benditas son aquellas personas que luchan en contra del estigma de la salud mental, pues ellas conocerán la paz.
Dichosxs son lxs que resisten los sistemas de opresión, pues ellxs manifiestan el reino de Dios.
Dichosxs son los que construyen puentes en vez de paredes, pues de ellas es el futuro de la creación.
Benditas son las víctimas del maltrato sexual, pues Dios escucha sus súplicas y exigencias para un mejor futuro.
Dichosxs son aquellxs que no se ven reflejadas en las imágenes de las Escrituras traducidas por el patriarcado y el imperio, pues ellxs escucharán a Dios en muchos lugares.
Dichosxs son aquellxs que no pueden respirar, que caminan con Skittles, y que conducen sin luces, pues Dios se preocupa por su seguridad y de ellxs es Su promesa.
Dichosxs son aquellxs que están en las cárceles, pues están conectadxs al amor eterno del perdón de Dios.
Dichosxs son lxs inmigrantes y refugiaxs, pues ellxs pertenecen a la nación de Dios.
Dichosxs son aquellxs que crean, inspiran y sueñan nuevas visiones del mañana, pues de ellxs es el futuro de la iglesia.
Dichosas son aquellas personas quienes no se les invita a formar parte del servicio militar, su familia, o el baño, pues ellas encarnan el amor Dios.
Dichosxs son aquellxs sin agua, comida y electricidad en Puerto Rico y Flint, pues su sed por la justicia será satisfecha.
Dichosxs son aquellas personas cuyos nombres no se mencionan en la lucha y aquellas voces que no se valoran en sus luchas, pues ellas tendrán a Dios de su lado.

Amigxs, oremos para que esta semana encontremos amor, apoyo e inspiración en aquellxs que influyen nuestras vidas. Oremos para que la inspiración nos ofrezca una reflexión profunda y una fe indeleble para el mundo por venir. Escribir estas beatitudes me ayudó recordar las maneras en que Dios me llama a estar presente en mi pasado y futuro. ¿Quiénes son lxs bendecidxs en el mundo y en tu vida que te llaman a hacer lo mismo?
