#BeThePark: “Be Still” by Leonne Tanis
On November 9, 2016, I answered Pastor Kaji’s call to attend a prayer service at Park Avenue Christian Church to support the community after the presidential election. Before this day, it had been 10 plus years since I entered a church and even more since I prayed with a pastor or church leader. But, on November 9th, I prayed with strangers and sat in church asking God for strength and hope. What I did not know at the time was that November 9, 2016 would be the start of my re-entry into a church community. Since that time, the Park has become part of my life, part of my routine.
To “Be the Park” means to put Jesus’ teachings into action. This is why I serve, and why I am proud to be part of the Park.

When I joined the Park, I joined a movement. A social justice movement that supports undocumented immigrant rights and denounces a deportation policy steeped in racial bias. A church movement that fosters inclusiveness by recognizing the diversity of its community through multilingual services and asking “what pronouns do you prefer?”; that joins other communities in protesting unjust government actions like the illegal occupation of sacred land and the discrimination against the LGBTQIA community; and that invests in the emotional support of its congregation through workshops such as Speak and Naked.

El 9 de noviembre de 2016 respondí a una llamada de la pastora Kaji para venir a la iglesia a un servicio de oración, luego de las elecciones presidenciales. Antes de este día llevaba más de 10 años de no entrar a la iglesia y mucho más tiempo había pasado desde que oré con el liderazgo de la iglesia. Pero el 9 de noviembre, oré con gente desconocida, pidiéndole a Dios que nos diera fortaleza y esperanza.
Cuando me uní a The Park me hice parte de un movimiento. Un movimiento de justicia social que apoya los derechos de indocumentados que denuncia políticas de deportación fundamentadas en prejuicios raciales. Uno que promueve la inclusividad al reconocer las múltiples identidades en la comunidad a través de servicios multilingües y preguntándose, “¿cuál pronombre prefieres?”. Un movimiento que se une a otras comunidades protestando las acciones injustas gubernamentales como la ocupación ilegal de tierras sagradas y la discriminación en contra de la comunidad LGBTQIA. The Park es una comunidad de fe que hace posible el apoyo emocional de su congregación a través de talleres como Speak and Naked.
“Ser The Park” significa poner en acción las enseñanzas de Jesús. Por esto es que doy de mi tiempo para servir y porque me siento orgullosa de ser parte de The Park.
