“Be Joyful” – Sunday Preview for December 17 by The Rev. Stephanie Kendell

Beloved Church,

This week we will be gathering together at Park Avenue Synagogue to celebrate an hour of worship that promises to be beautiful and inspiring. We have a wonderful program of music that our choir has been faithfully rehearsing for weeks. I know it will be a Sunday you won’t want to miss.

This past Sunday our YASS Group (Young Adults) gathered to celebrate Christmas and a year of ministry together. We told stories, played games, and laughed more than I have laughed in a long time. We had put a lot of time and thought into this party, but the experience was so much better than I had imagined. For all that was going on in our worlds, we gathered to be present and show appreciation to each other and this church, for all that we have been given. The highlight of the night was supposed to be the gift exchange game.

All week I had been scouring boutique shops and holiday markets for the perfect gift for this game. I ended up purchasing three Angels made in Africa, whose sales go towards education for women, and a confetti shooter. I got them at the Winter Village at Bryant Park and they were perfect. I knew whoever received them would love them (or at least I hoped they would). So, Sunday after we had our fill of fondue and desserts, the 18 of us gathered in the living room to play the game. As the game of wrapped-gift-stealing commenced, the laughter was loud and the love was palpable. We each expected to get a small present from this gathering and game, but much like the shepherds in this week’s scripture, we got so much more. We got a truly unexpected gift, joy.

In that region, there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.  Then an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.  But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for see—I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people: to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah,[a] the Lord.  This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying,
“Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace among those whom God favors!” (Luke 2:8-14 NRSV)

When we experience joy, we get a small glimpse of the kin-dom of God here on earth. It reminds us of the incredible work that we need to do in this world but also of it’s great reward. Joy is the glimpse and the promise that everything will be better than expected when the kin-dom of God is on earth as it is in heaven. However, we also grieve the passing of joy when we realize the human part of us, that is in this time, does not get to live in the kin-dom of heaven just yet. But we can try. And we can be joyful as often as possible, and love as hard as we can, so that more often we can experience those small glimpses of the life made possible by Christ. A life of heaven on earth.

Church, this week may you seek and find unexpected joy. May the gift of this joy offer you an inspiring and hopeful look at the kin-dom of heaven here on earth. And may we give thanks to a God who continually offers love, faith, hope, and joy to us. What an unexpected gift it is to be God’s people.

¡Siente el gozo!

Amada iglesia,

Esta semana estaremos alabando en la sinagoga Park Avenue Synagogue para celebrar un tiempo de adoración que promete ser hermoso e inspirador. Hemos preparado un programa musical que nuestro coro lleva ensayando con empeño por varias semanas. Créanme que será un domingo que no querrán perderte.

El pasado domingo nuestro grupo YASS (de jóvenes adultos) se reunió para celebrar la Navidad y un año de ministerio. Contamos historias, jugamos y nos reímos más de lo que nos habíamos reído en mucho tiempo. Le dedicamos mucho tiempo y ahínco a esta fiesta, pero la experiencia fue mucho mejor de lo que imaginamos. A pesar de todo lo que ocurre en nuestros entornos, nos juntamos para estar presentes y para expresarnos aprecio, inclusive a esta iglesia por todo lo recibido. Lo más importante de la noche se suponía que fuera el intercambio de regalo.

Durante la semana me la pasé entrando en y saliendo de tiendas boutiques y mercados navideños para encontrar el regalo perfecto para traer al juego. Acabé comprando tres ángeles hechos en África, cuya venta apoya a la educación de mujeres, y también un disparador de confeti. Los encontré en Winter Village, en Bryant Park, y me parecieron perfectos. Sabía que no importaba quién los recibiera los agradecería (o por lo menos esperaba que así fuera). Entonces, el domingo, luego de llenarnos de fondue y postres, los 18 de nosotrxs nos reunimos en la sala para el juego. Mientras daba comienzo el robo de regalos envueltos, las carcajadas y el amor eran palpable. Todxs esperábamos recibir un pequeño obsequio, pero así como lxs pastorxs en la Escritura de esta semana, recibimos mucho más. Recibimos un regalo inesperado, el gozo.

En esa misma región había unos pastores que pasaban la noche en el campo, turnándose para cuidar sus rebaños. Sucedió que un ángel del Señor se les apareció. La gloria del Señor los envolvió en su luz, y se llenaron de temor. Pero el ángel les dijo: «No tengan miedo. Miren que les traigo buenas noticias que serán motivo de mucha alegría para todo el pueblo. Hoy les ha nacido en la Ciudad de David un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor. Esto les servirá de señal: Encontrarán a un niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre».
De repente apareció una multitud de ángeles del cielo, que alababan a Dios y decían:
«Gloria a Dios en las alturas,
y en la tierra paz a los que gozan de su buena voluntad».
(Lucas 2:8-14 NVI)

Cuando experimentamos gozo, obtenemos una ligera vista fugaz del reino de Dios aquí en la Tierra. Nos recuerda del trabajo increíble que necesitamos hacer en este Mundo, pero también sobre su recompensa. El gozo representa una mirada fugaz al futuro y la promesa de que todo saldrá mejor de lo esperado cuando el reino de Dios ‘se haga en la Tierra como en el Cielo’. No obstante, también estamos de luto por el gozo perdido cuando nos damos cuenta de nuestra humanidad que, al presente, aún no puede experimentar el reino de los cielos. A pesar de esto podemos intentarlo. Podemos vivir gozosxs tantas veces como sea posible y amar con la mayor intensidad posible, para que con más frecuencia podamos presenciar esas visiones fugaces de vida, facilitadas por Jesucristo—una vida del Cielo en la Tierra.

Pueblo de Dios, oremos, para que esta semana podamos buscar y encontrar el gozo inesperado. Que el regalo de este gozo te brinde e inspire a mirar hacia el reino de aquí en la Tierra, y que podamos dar gracias a Dios. Demos gracias a un Dios quien continuamente nos ofrece amor, fe, esperanza y gozo. Pertenecer al pueblo de Dios es un regalo inesperado.
