Dear Church:

For our weekly newsletter, I typically give an exegetical introduction and things to think about for your church preparations. This week, before I’ve had a chance to complete this work, I want to get this out more quickly.

Yesterday, the Supreme Court issued its decision in Louisiana v. Callais, a major voting rights case with serious implications for our community.

In response, the NAACP will be holding an important call tonight:

Emergency Briefing | Louisiana v. Callais: What It Means & What We Do Next

I do hope that you will join me in attending this important update. We gather in hope and ready for action.

Our text this Sunday is from 1 Peter, with “an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading.” It’s a word for people trying to remain faithful through trials, and it asks us to consider what has been entrusted to us.

That feels especially urgent this week. The Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act were secured through blood, prayer, organizing, sacrifice, and time. We are heirs to that labor & stewards of that hope. We will not let their sacrifice go in vain.

Can’t wait to see you in church on Sunday!

Pax Christi,

Pastor Kaji

SCRIPTURE
1 Peter 1:3-9 (Year A, p. 314)

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Redeemer Jesus Christ who in great mercy has engendered a new birth for us into a living hope, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 into an inheritance that is incorruptible, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you all, 5 who in the power of God are kept through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the end time. 6 In this you rejoice even when necessary for you to suffer various trials, 7 in order that the examination of your faith, more precious than gold, which though perishable is tested by fire, may be found yielding praise and glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 You have not seen him, yet you love him. You do not see him now, yet you believe in him and rejoice with a joy glorious and beyond words. 9 You are receiving the completion of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
