Children and Youth Ministry Update from The Rev. Francesca Fortunato

December 5th,2019 Categories: Latest News
Dear Park People,

The Children’s Ministry community had a very exciting time on the first Sunday of Advent (12/1). During Sunday school, we read Matthew 24: 36-44. Our discussion focused on the meaning of preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and all of the things that we do in this season, to get ready for Christmas. (Planning out celebrations, decorating, and buying gifts, as we do when we have birthday parties for people in our families.) After our conversation, the children created their own Advent calendars, to help with their preparations at home, using stickers depicting the characters in the Nativity story.

Following the service, we went out to the Narthex together, and decorated The Park’s Christmas tree. The children had enormous fun with that, and made the tree look so beautiful!

This coming Sunday, December 8th, the children will be having another song-and-story workshop with our former Interim Music Minister, Paul Vasile. This will give them one more chance to practice their singing and movement with him, before their participation as worship leaders on Pageant/Cantata Sunday, 12/22. Our whole children’s ministry community are so thankful for Paul’s joyful and playful presence with us, and for the opportunity to take a more active part in Advent worship, with his guidance.

As I write this, I’m looking out my living room window at snow! It’s rare to have accumulating snow in New York City, before Winter Solstice. I can’t say that I felt ready, but I appreciate the beauty of it, as well as the fact that plowing and shoveling are not my jobs! This seems like a fitting beginning for Advent; a time of light emerging from darkness, and plenty of surprises.

Blessings and well wishes as always,
Rev. Francesca Fortunato: Children’s Minister
