Children and Youth Ministry Update from The Rev. Francesca Fortunato

October 25th,2019 Categories: Latest News
Dear Park People,
On Sunday October 20th, the Park Sunday school children read the story of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector, from the Gospel of Luke. We discussed the very different ways of praying that those two people had, and the reasons why Jesus said that the Tax Collector’s prayer was the better one (because God calls us to seek God’s help, when we pray; not to praise ourselves and try to impress others).

For their creative response activity, the children play-acted the two different styles of prayer, with each child doing, first, a prayer in the manner of the Pharisee, and then in the manner of the Tax Collector. Some of the Pharisee-style prayers that they came up with were really funny, while also showing their understanding. My favorites: “Thank you, God, for making me the perfect child; I’m so perfect that you should make all the other children to be clones of me!” And: “Thank you, God, for making me so beautiful, so rich, and so famous, that I don’t even need friends.” Their Tax Collector-style prayers were not funny, but also showed understanding: “Please, God, help me be a better person.” “God, make me able to help people.”

On the 27th, our last Sunday in October, we will read the second epistle of Timothy, which is about God’s provision and protection. We will talk about the ways that we feel the protective presence of God in our lives, and the ways that God uses loving relationships (our families and friends) to manifest those blessings for humanity. For our creative response, we will draw self portraits, with the images of ourselves surrounded by words and pictures representing ways that God takes care of us. We’ll be hanging some of those pictures on the portable partition that we use, to set the Children’s Ministry area apart from the rest of the Fellowship Hall, so, look for them when you come in there, after service.

Blessings and well wishes as always,
Rev. Francesca Fortunato: Children’s Minister
