Children and Youth Ministry Update from Rev. Francesca Fortunato
Dear Park People,On October 7th, 2018, the Park Sunday school children read Mark 10:13-16. We discussed Jesus hanging out with children (because Jesus thought that children were important, and worth listening to.) Then, the children were asked to imagine themselves and their friends spending time with Jesus. Where would they go? What would they do? How might Jesus dress, or look, in 2018? For their response activity, the children drew pictures of themselves and their friends with Jesus. The pictures showed Jesus at Starbucks; at Chuck E. Cheese! Jesus wore a Tuxedo. A bright sweater with shiny buttons. A crown. A cape. Blue jeans with brown shoes and white gloves…
On Sunday October 14th, the children will read Job 23: 1-6. We will discuss the ways that Job talked with God – about his troubles and fears, as well as his joys. We can also bring our whole selves to God, when we pray. And we can also bear witness and give comfort to each other, by hearing each other’s sorrows, as well as each other’s joys.
Our response activity will be an active listening exercise, in which the children will take turns telling their own experiences of trouble, fear, or sorrow, while the rest of the community witnesses and supports them (they will be reminded to choose an experience that isn’t TOO private; something they feel willing to share). After every child has told their story, we will share our feelings about telling our own stories, and hearing our friends’ stories.
Blessings, prayers, and well wishes as ever,
Rev. Francesca Fortunato, Director of Children’s Ministry
